Memiliki perasaan takut gagal mungkin sesuatu yang wajar. Namun jika terus terkungkung oleh perasaan itu hingga tak pernah bisa melakukan apa-apa, perlu diwaspadai.
Orang seperti ini hanya mau bermain di area safe. Namun sebenarnya bermain di area safe pun memiliki risiko besar. Setidaknya ia tak akan beranjak dari kondisinya saat ini.
Sebenarnya, ketakutan itu hanya karena orang terlalu underestimate terhadap kemampuannya.Nah, strategi berikut akan membantu mengatasi ketakutan gagal dan menumbuhkan keberanian.
1. Pertimbangkan ongkos yang harus dipikul jika kita melewatkan peluang yang berada di hadapan.
Misalnya, kita tak akan bisa mengatasi masalah keuangan yang sedang kita hadapi padahal masalah ini telah mengganggu begitu lama. Atau jika tak diambil, kita tak akan pernah dipromosikan jadi manajer, direktur atau jabatan penting lainnya.
2. Lakukan penelitian untuk menemukan sisi baik dan buruknya dari suatu kesempatan.
Ketidaktahuan adalah sumber terbesar dari ketakutan. Ketika kita tidak tahu apa yang sedang kita hadapi, konsekuensi yang kita hadapi akan selalu tampak lebih besar dari kondisi sebenarnya. Karena itu tumbuhkan keberanian atau minat untuk mencari tahu apa yang sedang kita hadapi. Lakukan riset. Dengan cara ini kita akan menemukan sisi baik dan buruknya dari kesempatan yang tengah dihadapi sehingga kita bisa tahu apa saja risikonya.
3. Tampilkan skenario terburuk.
Jika kita mengejar suatu impian dan tenyata gagal meraihnya, seberapa lama mental kita akan pulih untuk kembali hidup normal atau berani mengejar kesempatan lain? Umumnya kemampuan kita pulih jauh lebih cepat dari perkiraan kita.
Misalnya kita adalah karyawan suatu perusahaan, namun merasa tidak betah berada di sana karena berbagai alasan. Namun untuk berhenti dan mencari pekerjaan baru takut tidak akan mendapatkannya atau kalaupun mendapatkannya pasti akan diraih setelah sekian lama mencarinya. Padahal seringkali jika mencobanya, tak akan begitu lama atau begitu sulit pekerjaan baru akan didapat.
4. Memahami manfaat kegagalan.
Ada peribahasa, hidup adalah serangkaian percobaan, makin sering kita mencobanya makin baik kehidupan bisa kita raih. Setiap kegagalan adalah percobaan untukmelakukan sesuatu, semacam eksperimen, serta juga merupakan kesempatan untuk tumbuh dan berkembang.Bahkan jika kegagalan itu berakibat pada kerugian finansial, manfaatnya dapat dikonversi sebagai bahan pelajaran yang jauh lebih mahal dari kerugian keuangan yang kita dapat.
5. Membuat rencana alternatif.
Cara lain untuk mengatasi ketakutan akan kegagalan adalah dengan mengurangi sisi negatifnya. Atasi risikonya dengan membuat rencana alternatif. Jika pilihan pertama gagal, kita dapat mempertahankan status quo dengan rencana cadangan yang solid. Berani gagal bukan berarti kita harus mengambil risiko kehilangan semuanya. Jika kita mengelola risiko dengan cerdas, kita dapat mengambil manfaat dari peluang yang memiliki risiko tinggi sambil kita menebar jaring penyelamat untuk berjaga-jaga agar kita tak jatuh terpuruk.
6. Take action.
Cara terbaik untuk mengurangi rasa takut dan membangun kepercayaan diri adalah denganmengambil tindakan (take action). Begitu kita melakukannya, kita akan mulai mengumpulkan pengalaman dan pengetahuan. Semuanya sulit pada saat melakukannya pertama kalinya. Ini seperti melompat dari tebing ke dalam danau. Setelah kita melakukannya sekali, kita akan melihat bahwa air tersebut aman dan setiap kali kita mencobanya lagi segalanya akan berjalan lebih mudah. Karena itu take action. Mulailah dengan langkah kecil sambil membangun kepercayaan diri sampai takut gagal bisa kita atasi sebaik-baiknya.
7. Membakar perahu.
Ini pepatah Yunani kuno. Ketika tentara Yunani melintasi laut untuk berperang, hal pertama yang mereka lakukan setelah mendarat adalah membakar perahu mereka sendiri. Dengan cara ini tak ada jalan untuk pulang. Satu-satunya jalan adalah maju berperang dengan upaya mati-matian. Begitu pun kala mengejar apa yang kita inginkan. Dengan tak punya alternatif lain kita akan mati-matian mengejar peluang yang ada.
